I've been home for a little over a month now, and I still can't believe I ever left Chile. Sometimes I find myself speaking Spanish, throwing my toilet paper out, or looking up to see magnificent mountains that I know are not there. When people ask me how it feels to be home, I always say it is very bitter sweet. I had a great time when I was there and I loved coming home to all my friends and family, but the realization hit me that I will probably never get the opportunity to go back. And to me, that is bitter sweet.
Since I have been home, I enjoy retelling all of my stories from the mountains and horses, to my amazing host family and students. I have tried to keep in contact with my host family and friends but it is difficult. Coming home means going back to reality with my jobs, friends, and family. However, I will always hold the memories I made with the all amazing people close to my heart and I know they have had a lasting impact on me. I also find myself being more aware of what I say to people and how the United States is perceived. I enjoy futbol a little more now, and I was thrilled to hear that Chile had won Copa America. I have taken back so much from Chile and it has changed me forever. Professionally, I now know that ESL is exactly what I want to do for my masters program. I connected with all of the students when I was in Chile and now I know what it feels like to walk in their shoes. Learning a new language in a different country was difficult, but I can not relate to these students and I will be more patient with them in my classroom. Coming home was difficult, but I wouldn't change anything for the world. I grew not only personally but also professionally, and that it something I will always carry with me. I enjoyed all of the friends and memories I have made and I know I will be talking about this trip for years to come. I can now say that even though I live in the United States, Chile will always be another home.

AuthorHello! My name is Rachel, but most people call me Ray. I am going to be an elementary school teacher and I love to read! I chose to be a part of this program because I find Chile to be fascinating, and I love the Spanish language! I am hoping to learn more about the different culture, and take back different activities and lessons for my future classroom. I'm so excited!
