Today we drove to Cajon de Maipo (which lies in the foothills of the Andes) to go trekking. Our guides were Jaquelín and Pablo. Pablo had been our guide two years ago so it was great to see him again and hear about the rock climbing he has been doing (and to have him point out the rock faces that he scales). There was a lot more snow than usual which meant that we weren’t able to get up as high as in the past, but the experience was still breath taking and beautiful. The snow was swirling across the top of the San José Volcano against a very blue sky. It was rough going since we often fell through the snow up to our hips, but it felt good to have a day of fresh Andean air.
We had lunch at a little town at the bottom of the trail and then returned to Santiago. We made another trip to the Mexican restaurant (my new favorite place!) where I had café de olla and pozole. Then back home to warm up and dry off and also get ready for tomorrow’s excursion to Valparaiso and Isla Negra.
