Bienvenido al blog de Alexia Darlene Matos Mateo. Today I shared with you many interesting and wonderful memories made in Santiago de Chile during these past few days. To begin with, I would like to share an accomplishment that is so close to my heart. On May 30th, 2015 I had the wonderful experience of trekking /hiking the ANDES mountains. Yes, the famous ANDES mountains. Not a sign of anxiety or nervousness was felt. Every step and every rock that I came across with reminded me of the challenges that I went through and overcome in my life. I been knocked down so many times that I did not know that I could be deserving of paradise. I am so fortunate to be here today, and I can’t thank SUNY Buffalo State and the Education department for giving me the opportunity to accomplish this. I would also like to give a huge shoutout to the ARMY ROTC for the immense yet valuable training this past semester. I was mentally and physically ready to hike the ANDES moutains. In addition to trekking the ANDES Mountains I would like to state a very humbling experience that I encounter this weekend. After trekking the mountains as a group we decided to go to a local family restaurant in a small town near the ANDES. Moreover, this place is known for their delicious empanadas. I’ll start by stating my obsession with empanadas. Therefore I decided to order another delicious ham and cheese empanada. Sadly, the owners had made a mistake with my order. They asked if I’ll like another kind of empanada and I softly answered ”it’s ok, no biggie”, of course in Spanish. They felt so bad and gave me a free cake. My conscious would not let me take the cake. I felt that there was not any mistake. Yet this kind hearted and humbling action reminded me of my mom; a woman who is willing to give her own leg and arm for the greater good of human kind. She has such an amazing quality for which she has pass on to me. This kind action reminded that there is good in all people. No matter where you go or what seas you travel there is people who were placed to do well in this world. I’m just a New York City girl who hopes to be the change she wants to see in this world. It is to remember that all you need is a voice, and an audience. Such a small person with a big heart and my voice will be heard one day I hope. Furthermore, other small events that occurred over the course of the week included a visit to a Mexican restaurant were I seen images illustrated on the walls of my favorite show when I was a young kiddo. This show was called “EL CHAVO” it was so amazing to see how Chile incorporates different cultures within their own culture. Also, we visited Santa Lucia a very beautiful place. There we learn more about the history of Chile. Something that stood out the most was that in Santa Lucia there is a castle, and in that castle there is an underground passage. In this passage there was prostitution, and slavery that occurred in the Early 1500’s. WOW! Every country has it’s own history that may be known or not to society. Thank you to everyone who follows me in this journey. I hope that you are interested and proud of all the footsteps being printed in this path.

I can't believe the light in/on the mountains. And if the pictures do not do it justice then they must be jaw-dropping gorgeous! It sounds like your time in the Andes was like one very big and soul-clenching hug. Nice :)

Alexia, I love how you described your visit to the Andes -- what an amazing experience and incredibly beautiful photo. From Dr. Patti's blog posts, it sounds like you have played an important role as the group's translator -- gracias :)

Alexia - what a wonderful story about the free cake and your immediate thoughts of your own mother! That's another great reminder that people are the same, at the core, all over the world, and kindness translates in any language (although I know you needed no translator and ARE actually the translator - LOL). I loved hearing about your hiking experiences and so glad that you will have these memories long after you return home. Keep posting - we love reading about your experiences and hearing your poetry :)
