Now that I am home, all I can think about is how much I miss being in Chile! People ask me all the time “how was Chile?” and I don’t even want to answer because I haven’t accepted the fact that the experience is over. However, now it’s time to finally admit that it is over, so all that’s left to do is reflect on my experience.
There were a lot of things that I expected to happen on this trip and I am happy to say that my expectations were met. For this trip I expected that I would: · Face some fears- check ( though, this happened more often than I expected) · Try lots of new things- check · Learn a lot- check · Share a lot -check · Gather new teaching ideas- check · Have lots of fun- double check! Now for the things that I didn’t expect: Now that I’ve been back for a while, I’m starting to notice a slight change in my behavior and attitude toward life. I noticed that I am a lot more relaxed and easy going. Though I have much to get done (grad school, grad assistantship, and the few certification items that still hang over my head), I still manage to remain calm. It’s like the easy-going nature of Chilean culture has caught on to me. I guess stress doesn’t come from how much you have to get done, but instead from your mindset about it. This is something I hope doesn’t fade away. Secondly, I’ve noticed a change in my diet. Before going to Chile I had very poor eating habits. The food my Chilean host mom prepared, however, was far from the junk I was used to eating. After eating healthier for three weeks (after all, they say it only takes 21 days to form a habit) I came home and decided to keep it going. Let’s hope this doesn’t change as well! *By the way, I miss the natural juices from Chile!!! I could probably find it here, but in comparison to the ones in Chile, it would probably cost an arm and a leg and wouldn’t be as fresh!* The biggest change is this burning desire I have to travel now. I will definitely travel abroad again and I am strongly considering teaching abroad! The funny thing is that a couple of weeks before the trip a friend of mine asked me if I would ever do one of those teaching abroad programs. My response was no because I couldn’t imagine leaving home and being away from everyone for a year or two. It seemed like too big of a commitment for too much amount of time. Now, however, I think I could! I specifically want to go to a Spanish speaking country so that I could continue to learn Spanish. Maybe even back to Chile. Keep watch Santiago, I just may be back.

AuthorHello all, or should I say “¡hola!”? My name is Crystal and I’ve recently graduated SUNY Buffalo State with a degree in Elementary Education (grades 1-6) and Social Studies Education (grades 7-9). I will soon begin my studies for Literacy Specialist Certification, but not before I embark on this wonderful journey to Santiago, Chile. For me, this trip beings the opportunity for me to immerse myself in another culture, experience language learning, and adopt new teaching styles; all of which will contribute to making me a teacher who is culturally responsive and able to cater to the diverse needs of students. I anticipate that this trip wil be filled with excitement, challenges, and new understandings! So please, join me for the ride! ArchivesCategories |
