May 23rd Dr. Patti, Dr. del Prado, and Dr. Schmidt were right when they said life in Santiago Chile would we cold at night! Last night, I definitely felt the "cold" they were talking about at the BBQ. Not only did I feel the cold outside, but I continue to feel extremely chilly inside the apartment that I am living in due to the fact there there is no heat inside the building. As an American, I am starting to feel that we over consume and take for granted the heat that we have, using our thermostat. This is not the case in Chile. Instead there are a few space heaters that are in the buildings that I have been inside. I appreciate that the Chileans care about conserving energy. Back at home, many of us are not concerned about turning on the heat to warm up. In Chile, it's best to just wear layers. I know I probably said this already, but I LOVE it here. Yes, the streets are filled with people and there are a lot of crowds, it is such a beautiful place! I feel wonderful! After our Spanish class, our group decided to have lunch at a Mexican restaurant. Everything is in the same vicinity, so it is fairly easy to get around. On the left is a photo of our group before walking to lunch. Everyone is so happy and ready for whatever the next adventure may be! Notice everyone's smiles! After lunch, our group walked to the University to observe Chilean college classes. The room that I observed was very small with about 8 students. All of the students (including the teacher) spoke English. While in the Chilean college classroom, I noticed that the classroom looked different from a typical classroom at Buffalo State College. This classroom was much smaller and did not have a lot of technology. Afterwards, our group was introduced to another group at the University. We discussed Chilean school life and American school life.
Grocery shopping was another great adventure! I wish I had a picture of the grocery store from the inside. It was packed with people! Since there were so many people, I learned how to say, "excuse me" and "sorry." I guess I can say that I mastered those words! I am still having trouble paying for something at the store. That is something that will get better with time! Thanks for following my blog! Chau! -Claire
